As part of a well-rounded liberal arts education at Wesleyan, paying attention to physical health and its impact on cognitive performance is an essential component. To support students’ physical health, Wesleyan offers a diverse array of Health and Physical Education (HPE) courses taught by experts in their respective fields. These hands-on courses give students the valuable opportunity to learn about and actively participate in various physical activities and sports.

The HPE curriculum is thoughtfully designed to enable students to explore new activities, develop lifelong healthy habits, and understand how exercise, and lifestyle choices affect overall health and academic performance. Courses range from personal health to fitness courses such as tennis, soccer, volleyball, and more. Students can choose activities that interest them as a fun way to de-stress, socialize with peers, and counteract the largely sedentary nature of a rigorous academic schedule.

With a focus on both health knowledge and active participation, HPE courses provide an integrated approach to cultivating well-rounded student development. Students gain practical tools for managing stress, nourishing their boides, establishing consistent exercise routines, working collaboratively, and pursuing lifelong enjoyment of physical activities for health of both mind and body. This holistic educational experience prepares students not just for success at Wesleyan but for living vibrant, healthy lives long after graduation.

By completing HPE courses, students will:

  • Develop competency and technique in skills associated with specific sports and/or fitness activities, such as proper form, rules of play, equipment use, and strategy.
  • Improve physical fitness levels by actively participating for the duration of the course at appropriate intensity levels.
