FRN 200: Stories of the Francophone World: Literature and Culture in Translation


Goal: Students will analyze Francophone literary and cultural works in translation, interpreting how they reflect and shape cultural identities and historical contexts. They will compare diverse perspectives across Francophone communities and articulate their cultural significance. Additionally, they will reflect comparatively on their own culture in relation to the themes and experiences presented in the course. 
Content: This course explores the diverse cultures, histories, and identities of the Francophone world through literature, film, and other cultural artifacts in English translation. From West Africa and the Caribbean to Europe and Québec, students will examine how authors and artists express themes such as colonialism, resistance, migration, identity, gender, and belonging. Each iteration of the course may focus on a particular region, period, or theme. No knowledge of French is required. 
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101  or permission of instructor
