SPA 200: Stories of the Hispanophone World: Literature and Culture in Translation Goal: Students will analyze Hispanophone literary and cultural works in translation, interpreting how they reflect and shape cultural identities and historical contexts. They will compare diverse perspectives across Hispanophone communities and articulate their cultural significance. Additionally, they will reflect comparatively on their own culture in relation to the themes and experiences examined. Content: This course introduces students to the cultural and literary expressions of the Spanish-speaking world through works in English translation. Students will explore texts and cultural artifacts originating in Latin America, Spain, the Caribbean, and U.S. Latinx communities. Topics may vary by semester and might include dictatorship and memory, migration, feminism, or indigenous perspectives. The course emphasizes critical thinking about identity, power, and cultural exchange. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required. Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 or permission of instructor Credit: 3 Degree Level: Undergraduate
