NUR 226: Foundations for Nursing: Nutrition, Dosage Calculations, and Medical Terminology Goal:
- Understand the basics of nutrition and its impact on health and disease.
- Perform basic dosage calculations using standard formulas and unit conversions.
- Demonstrate competency in interpreting and using medical terminology.
- Build confidence in communicating using appropriate healthcare language.
Content: This introductory pre-nursing course is designed to prepare students for entry into nursing and allied health programs by building a strong foundation in essential healthcare topics. Students will explore the principles of human nutrition and their role in health promotion and disease prevention. The course also introduces basic dosage calculations, including converting units, calculating safe medication dosages, and interpreting medication labels. Emphasis is placed on accuracy and safety in clinical settings. Additionally, students will develop a working knowledge of medical terminology, including word roots, prefixes, and suffixes used to describe body systems, medical procedures, and pathologies. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with fundamental knowledge and skills to succeed in nursing education. Prerequisite(s): Must have declared a pre-nursing major.
