CHM 210: Introduction to Research in Chemistry


Goal: To introduce students to research practices in chemistry. To develop laboratory skills as they use the scientific method to design and execute a short research project. To develop oral and written communication skills related to scientific explorations. To explore practical and ethical aspects of science. To prepare students for more in depth (semester or multi-semester) future research projects in CHM 451 .
Content: In this course, students will develop basic laboratory techniques as they design and execute a short research project based on an initial observations. They will gain skills related to understanding and maximizing accuracy and precision in scientific inquiry. Additionally, students will form initial hypotheses, test them, and revise their experiments if needed. Students will present their work and findings both orally and in written form.
Prerequisite(s): CHM 101  (with a C or better).
