HIS 350: North American and Atlantic World History Goal: This course, North American and Atlantic World History, offers students an immersive exploration of historical developments within the United States, broader North America, and the Atlantic world. The course challenges students to achieve four primary goals: First, students will develop an in-depth understanding of one or more topics such as U.S. national formation, colonial encounters, migration patterns, trade networks, and cultural exchanges across these interconnected regions. Second, students will learn to critically analyze complex interconnections between the United States, other North American societies, Europe, Africa, and Latin America by applying advanced theoretical frameworks to specific historical contexts. Third, students will synthesize diverse perspectives on U.S. and transatlantic history by integrating viewpoints from various regions and cultures within this dynamic sphere. Finally, students will communicate sophisticated historical interpretations with scholarly language, supporting their claims through appropriate primary and secondary source evidence. Through these objectives, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the transformative historical processes that have shaped the United States and societies across the Atlantic world.
