HIS 346: Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean History


Goal: This course offers students an immersive exploration of historical dynamics across East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The course challenges students to achieve four primary goals: First, students will develop an in-depth understanding of one or more topics such as religious movements, trade networks, imperial systems, and political changes throughout these diverse regions. Second, students will learn to critically analyze complex regional patterns by applying advanced theoretical frameworks to the cultural ties that have existed throughout different periods. Third, students will synthesize diverse Asian and Pacific perspectives by integrating viewpoints from various cultures and traditions across the regions. Finally, students will communicate sophisticated historical interpretations with scholarly language, supporting their claims through appropriate primary and secondary source evidence. Through these objectives, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the profound historical interconnections that have shaped the societies in this region. 
Prerequisite(s): Satisfactory completion of College writing proficiency requirement or permission of instructor.
